Still, Here

Parlour Projects is delighted to present an online exhibition of new work by Billie Culy, on view from March 1 to 31, 2021.

Titled Still, Here, the exhibition features ten new photographic works that were created upon Culy's abrupt return to Aotearoa in 2020.
At a time of immense change, both personally and globally, the works explore the intimacies of the artist's thought processes and emotions during this period of unsettlement and upheaval.

Imagined worlds were a kind of salve to an uneasy mental state.

Culy describes her experience as ‘a dream-like state, neither here nor

there, often confusing dreams with reality.’

In this new body of work, Culy attempts to make sense of this time through her work, employing colours, objects and materials that made their way into her life throughout this period as though it was fate.
Much like her dreams, the works combine vivid colours with flowers, fruits and vessels. Despite their boldness, each scene achieves a sense of eeriness and stillness.
Surreal elements are tied together with objects that seem to have a certain mystery and life of their own, each with their own imperfections and subtle details that momentarily bring the viewer back to reality.
Despite the eeriness of the works, the artist strives to take the viewer on a journey that is soothing, creating a sense of hopefulness, playfulness and nostalgic charm.

Each work is comprised of archival pigment ink on Hahnemühle 100% cotton rag paper. The works can be sold unframed or framed (in a white box frame), and are available in varying dimensions –
