"Since moving from the raw West Coast beaches of Tāmaki Makaurau to the tropical Northern beaches of Sydney, I have embarked upon a new era of painting. I find myself in a different world of creatures and plants. My eyes and ears have a new lease on life. The flowers bloom at different times of each season. The birds and their sounds are alien, as is the tropical air on my skin," states Herd. "The simple act of observing has become as important as the painting process itself. I spend my days in and out of my backyard studio, sitting, looking, walking and picking flowers from nearby gardens, noticing colours and pools of light at different times of the day. I'm constantly studying the still life subject throughout the day as light fills and leaves the room. I find myself painting in different rooms or spaces in a meditative state. It's not until I take the work into my studio that I see it merge into the broader collection of paintings, where it begins to make sense." – Nick Herd
