Parlour Projects is delighted to present an online exhibition of new work by Billie Culy, on view from March 1 to 31, 2021.
In this new body of work, Culy draws upon a period of unsettlement. Culy came home to Aotearoa abruptly after moving overseas. Going through an adjustment period, her latest series explores the intimacies of her thought patterns and emotions during this time.
Imagined worlds were a kind of salve to an uneasy mental state. Culy describes her experiences as ‘a dream-like state, neither here nor there, often confusing dreams with reality.’ In Still, Here, Culy attempts to make sense of these experiences through her work, combining colours and objects that made their way into her life throughout this time as though it was fate.
Much like her dreams, the works contrast vivid colours and bold objects against a sense of eeriness and stillness. Real flowers are juxtaposed against plastic vessels and fruits. Surreal elements are tied together with objects that seem to have a certain mystery and life of their own, each with their own imperfections and subtle details that momentarily bring the viewer back to reality. At a time of immense change, Culy hopes to take the viewer on a journey that is soothing, incorporating elements of hopefulness, playfulness and nostalgic charm.
